For centuries, the harp has been considered the symbol of Ireland. It dates back to the medieval period in Irish history and can be seen on crosses and manuscripts from that time. The harp also became a political symbol in Ireland's struggle for independence. In the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, the harp was adopted by various nationalist movements, such as the Society of United Irishmen for example. Today, the harp is the national emblem of Ireland. It appears on our currency, our passports and the Presidential Seal. No Irish home is complete without a harp appearing somewhere!
